Best Cultural Luxury Safari Camps. Africa is one of the only luxury holiday destinations where the cultural aspect can still be a big thing if it interests you. Many of our luxury safari camps and lodges employ members of the local community to support rural people and keep their traditions strong. There are still areas of Africa where tribes are living completely traditionally and Africans are famous for their hospitality, therefore if we organise an authentic cultural experience for you whilst you are in Africa you can rest assured that you will be treated with unrivalled friendliness and will learn a huge amount from whichever tribe you visit. Here are some of our favourite camps for culture in Africa:
1 Nduara Loliondo, Serengeti, Tanzania
Nduara Loliondo is a quirky and luxurious tented camp set in a very remote corner of the North Eastern Serengeti. Here you will have a truly authentic and touching experience with the local Masai who live traditionally in this area – you will do everything from tracking and foraging to making bows and arrows and learning medicinal uses for plants. The area Nduara is located in itself is incredibly beautiful and worth seeing even if the cultural aspect does not interest you.
2 Tena Tena Camp, South Luangwa, Zambia
Tena Tena was started by famous walking safari guide Robin Pope – he set up this enchanting camp in the private Nsefu Sector which has phenomenal game viewing but also has fantastic links to the local community – you can even spend the night in a village if you want to, welcomed by a local family who are living traditionally in this area.
3 Saruni Samburu, Northern Kenya
Saruni is one of the most luxurious lodges in Africa and has some of the best views we have seen anywhere in the world. Here they are very much in the centre of the nomadic Samburu tribe’s territory and they employ a vast number of these elegant, beautiful and well spoken people. The Samburu have a wicked sense of humour and stay at Saruni is always full of laughter and fun. Here again you can visit a local village which is 100% authentic and natural.
4 Royal Zambezi Lodge, Lower Zambezi, Zambia
Royal is a luxurious and friendly lodge located on the edge of the Lower Zambezi National Park – they are close to a local community known as the Goba people – they are a small tribe which is supported by the lodges and camps in this area and offer a totally unique cultural experience to those who have perhaps seen tribes in East Africa.
5 Tandala, Natron, Northern Tanzania
Tandala is a remote and wild safari camp which has stunning views of the Ol Donyo Lengai volcano – here you will have one of the most authentic experiences in Africa with the local Masai who still live very traditionally in this area. You really feel you are in ‘real’ Africa when you stay at this camp and will enjoy breath-taking scenery – game, birds and fantastic walking opportunities. Tandala is little known but is certainly worth the trip.
