Think white sand, think ankle deep turquoise water as far as the eye can see, think Medjumbe Island, Quirimbas, Mozambique. Nothing could prepare us for the raw stark beauty of this tiny island which houses an exclusive beach lodge for those wanting a touch of class. The lodge is small and intimate but feels like a luxury hotel with a slick service, modern bright décor and gourmet food to die for. The freshly baked pastries at breakfast (croissants, pain au chocolat, Portuguese tarts) were a particular favourite – followed by days of freshly caught sea food, or delicious gourmet burgers or similar.

The beach is one of the best in all of Mozambique and you will have it entirely to yourself – book out the luxury shaded day bed at the end of the beach and spend a happy day or afternoon enjoying one of the most stunning multi-coloured ocean scenes in the world. Medjumbe’s small touches such as candlelit dinners on remote beaches, sundowners (or whole days) on a nearby private island or rose petal baths make this into one of Mozambique’s best offerings.
