Vinita Singainy, the Conservation Coordinator at North Island, and her team have been incredibly busy tracking the movements of our native turtles – the Hawksbill turtle and the Green turtle. Both are protected species following a decline in turtle numbers in the Seychelles in 1980’s and as such, since 1998, we have been tracking the number of individual turtles coming to lay eggs on the island. A little graph outlined below.
We are delighted to say that in 2023, North Island reached a record of 504 nests across both the Hawksbill and Green turtles, the highest number seen to date! North Island is now starting to record and monitor successful and failed hatchings to better understand the factors threatening the nests and how they can continue to let both the Hawksbill and Green turtle species thrive on our magnificent island.
