Rekero has one of the best spots in the whole of the World Famous Masai Mara, since it was one of the earliest camp sites established in this predator rich paradise.

Rekero is run by Asilia, a brilliant safari company we work with regularly and it has now been refurbished to a seriously high level. This luxury Kenyan safari camp has come a long way from its origins of simple mobile tents. The latest refurbishment elevated the in-camp experience to new heights, but there is no doubt that the soul of Rekero, and the intangible magic felt by first time and repeat guests alike, is more alive than ever.

Rekero has stood proudly in the spot it currently occupies for over 20 years. It boasts unparalleled views of the Great Migration and the year-round game viewing is superb – it is easy to see why Rekero attracts so many returning guests, we feel this is always the best testament to any camp. Earlier this year both the tents and the main areas were completely redesigned with the goal to retain its well-known charm while offering an even better experience for guests.

The most significant change to the tents at Rekero is the design of the family tents. Space and comfort, especially for families travelling with older children, has been prioritised to enhance the experience. The main en suite bedroom, similar to a standard tent, is joined by a communal living area, with a second room adjoining that. This second room also has its own en suite bathroom, allowing for more privacy than the previous design, and is configured with twin beds but can also be turned into either a double or a triple room – family or multi gen safaris are really thriving in popularity at the moment and Rekero’s family tents are spacious, comfortable and super luxurious.

The orientation of the tent remains the same with only the main bedroom having river frontage, however the main entrance is now through the living room and the entire unit is much larger than before. Windows throughout offer a wonderfully light and airy feel which brings the beautiful riverine forest into the rooms.

The layout of the standard tents has broadly remained the same, but we’ve created additional privacy in the bathrooms through dividers and screens. The previous dark furniture has been re-purposed elsewhere (isn’t it funny how décor styles go in and out of fashion?!) and replaced with beautiful light mango wood, lending to a much brighter ambiance.

Rekero has always been known for its main areas and some of the very best views of the Mara. This remains a standout feature with the refurbishment really capitalising on those views with an incredible wrap-around deck and the main area doubled in size. The fresh new colour palette seamlessly blends into the surroundings, and the age-old existing trees, that the areas have been crafted around, provide welcome shade in the heat of the day.

A new library, which can double as a private dining area, tells the vibrant history of Rekero through a collection of book and photos.

We’ve had numerous clients through the new Rekero already with exceptional feedback from all, and we’ll be there later in the year to critique it (although we expect there to be absolutely no improvements needed to this stunning camp).
