Relaxing in Africa whilst on a luxury safari isn’t always something people associate with being in the bush – however we feel quite strongly that the wilderness is good for the soul, so heading to a luxury safari retreat rather than being hung up on the game viewing aspect can also be completely magical. It’s what we find ourselves here at The Luxury Safari Co doing more and more as just to be in these very remote areas is very healing, and certainly soothing for the soul. Of course the odd game drive at the same time is also amazing but here we focus on properties where one could go and simply relax, and not bother doing any game drives if they didn’t want to.
Segera Retreat, Northern Kenya
Segera is so beautifully done that you will never want to leave, their spa, gym and swimming pool is just there to spoil you and the large suites have their own views of the savannah which will often allow you to see game from your own verandah. The surrounding area is stunning and the views last for miles as it’s relatively flat on the Laikipia Plateau. The staff and service at Segera are some of the most efficient and warmest you will meet anywhere in Africa and we are not surprised this place has earned itself the reputation of splendour it currently has.
Chitwa Chitwa, Sabi Sands, South Africa
There are two wonderful things about Chitwa which make it one of the most relaxing luxury safari destinations in the world. The first is that they have a dam in front of the lodge which often has big game coming down to drink all day, and is full of hippo – so game viewing is literally from the lodge without you ever having to leave, and the second is their spa which is a spa to rival spas anywhere else in the world. They use natural African products and have some of the most highly trained spa therapists in the safari industry. Chitwa’s suites are all quirky and unique and you cannot help but be blown away by the little touches and attention to detail here. You may even wake up one morning to find a peaceful leopard asleep on your deck.
Royal Zambezi Lodge, Lower Zambezi, Zambia
There is always something about being on a river which is very very tranquil anyway – nothing can compare to watching flowing water, with elephants and hippos swimming around within it for relaxation. But perched high above the river this homely and luxurious lodge also have an amazing spa with far reaching views all the way to Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. The spa is open aired if weather allows and is so relaxing that one could literally spend all day in there. The rooms are based right down on the river and are extremely comfortable without being pretentious or over the top. Here you can also spend your relaxation time drifting on a boat down the Zambezi, the perfect way to end a spa day.
