Sungani Lodge Update: One of Africa’s Last True Wildernesses

Sungani, the Keeper of True Wilderness

The name Sungani (pronounced suhn-gah-nee) comes from the Chichewa language, meaning “custodian” or “keeper.” It is a fitting name for this family-run safari camp, born from a deep love of the people, land and wilderness of South Luangwa in Zambia.

Nestled in the southern reaches of South Luangwa National Park, Sungani Lodge is nestled in an area once scarred by neglect, illegal activity and poaching. In 2019, the Davy family first set eyes on the crumbling remains of what was once an elegant hotel. The remoteness of the site made the idea of creating a luxury safari lodge seem almost impossible, yet the beauty of the Luangwa and its untouched wilderness inspired them. From that moment, the family committed to restoring the landscape, protecting wildlife and supporting local communities for generations to come.

Africa Tourism & Conservation

Become Part of the Sungani Promise

Every guest who visits Sungani becomes part of a promise to protect one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas. Sungani offers a deeply emotional safari experience that is rooted in conservation, community empowerment and regenerative travel. The mission is not only to create unforgettable safari experiences in Africa but also to ensure that the presence of visitors benefits both people and the planet.

By rehabilitating thousands of acres of once-barren land, Sungani has created a haven where wildlife thrives once again. Leopards are now seen almost daily, wild dogs have returned to the region and guests often witness conservation projects first-hand, such as collaring operations in partnership with the Zambian Carnivore Programme.

Conservation at the Heart of a Luxury Safari

At Sungani, conservation is more than a mission statement; it is a way of life. The team believes that true progress comes not from conflict but from listening to local communities and learning from nature. Guests quickly recognise that Sungani’s spirit of understanding and respect extends far beyond the lodge itself.

Years of collaboration with conservation partners have already borne fruit. The number of wildlife sightings has grown dramatically, from elephants, buffalo and hippos to crocodiles, leopards, wild dogs and countless bird species. This extraordinary recovery makes every safari drive at Sungani both thrilling and deeply meaningful.

Sungani Lodge

The lodge is a showcase of understated African luxury. Set on the edge of a tranquil lagoon and shaded by indigenous trees, Sungani was designed for privacy, relaxation and immersion in nature. Elevated walkways provide sweeping views and allow guests to move safely around the property.

The architecture embraces natural colours and local materials so that the lodge blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Every aspect of Sungani Lodge has been created either by the Davy family or in partnership with local artisans. Accommodation consists of custom-designed tents with four king and three doubles. Each features polished concrete floors to stay cool in warmer weather, as well as private decks and plunge pools. Bathrooms include slipper baths, indoor and outdoor showers, the comfort of luxury linens, fluffy towels and a complimentary laundry service.

For those seeking the ultimate safari indulgence, the Director’s Tent elevates luxury to another level with an outdoor sleeping setup that offers a unique connection to Africa’s night skies.

A Culinary Journey with African Flavours

Dining at Sungani is an experience in itself. Despite the lodge’s remote location, the culinary team goes above and beyond to showcase the finest local produce and celebrate authentic African flavours. Guests can enjoy à la carte breakfasts, buffet-style lunches, afternoon teas with savoury treats reminiscent of a bygone era, and seasonal dinner menus featuring locally sourced ingredients.

Meals are designed not only to delight but also to support the surrounding communities and farming initiatives, ensuring that every plate contributes to sustainable living in Africa.

A Photographer’s Dream Safari

Photography plays an important role in the Sungani experience. Whether you are a professional or a beginner, Sungani offers unique opportunities to capture Africa’s wildlife in its purest form. The head guide, an accomplished photographer, has developed several hideouts near watering holes and lagoons that allow for discreet observation. Guests can capture everything from elephants at play to leopards on the move without disturbing the natural rhythm of the bush.

The lodge also features a dedicated photographic studio, fully equipped with an Apple desktop loaded with Adobe software. Guests can process their images in peace and rent high-end photographic equipment for game drives. Photography is actively encouraged as a means of raising awareness for conservation, giving visitors the chance to contribute to Sungani’s mission long after they have returned home.

Safari Activities

Game Drives

Sungani’s custom-built safari vehicles redefine comfort. Each is fitted with luxury seats, modified suspension, foot rests and even professional Manfrotto camera supports. Removable roof canopies allow unobstructed views of the bush. As the sun sets, guests enjoy sundowners prepared by their guide before evening spotlighting begins. This is the perfect time to search for big cats, mongooses, scrub hares and other nocturnal species that are less common during the day.

Walking Safaris

Walking through South Luangwa with an expert guide is an experience like no other. Guests learn to read tracks, understand vegetation and witness Africa’s ecosystem on foot. The Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons create one of the most dynamic natural landscapes in Africa, ideal for an immersive exploration experience.

Additional adventures include:

  • Full-day game drives with chef-prepared picnic lunches
  • Bush dining along the Luangwa River, a nostalgic family-style experience under the stars

Regenerative Travel Through a Luxury Safari

A stay at Sungani Lodge is more than a holiday; it is a chance to make a difference. Every guest contributes to initiatives that fund schools, support healthcare, empower women and enhance conservation. Sungani measures its success not just by guest satisfaction but by the impact it creates for local families and wildlife.

This is the essence of regenerative travel, a philosophy that gives back more than it takes. Guests often describe their stay as being part of a remarkable comeback story: the transformation of a once-forgotten part of South Luangwa into a thriving wilderness.
