Zambia is lesser known than it’s more famous sister Botswana but it offers just as much. There is abundant game here and with the Lower Zambezi National Park being positioned perfectly on the Zambezi River you also have a variety of activities such as boating and canoeing which cannot always be done elsewhere. The South Luangwa is probably one of the best places in all of Africa to see leopard and the elephant viewing here is also sensational. The landscapes are stunning with rolling hills and much more and the guiding exceptional. We are obsessed with Zambia and often encourage people to look there instead of Botswana due to the fantastic value for money. This is simply because it is lesser known, not because the experience is anything other than magical. Here are our top five must visit luxury Zambia safari camps for 2016:

1          Liuwa Plains

Norman Carr are currently the only people operating a semi permament camp in the Liuwa Plains – this area is absolutely stunning with vast open plains, and the chance to see wild dog, cheetah and hyena in abundance. There is also a wildebeest migration here which rivals the more famous one in East Africa. You have to catch a scheduled flight for a four or five night stay in Liuwa and you can guarantee you won’t see another soul. It is really remote, wild and raw and Norman Carr’s new luxury camp which is currently being built promises to blow everyone away.

2          Sausage Tree Camp, Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi is awe inspiring, with a vast escarpment on one side and the Zambezi River on the other this natural basin is truly full of wildlife and Sausage Tree Camp is certainly best placed to see this. It is homely and welcoming while being very luxurious. The vast honeymoon suites and Kigelia Private House all have their own swimming pools, although the swimming pool for the main area is also stunning with views of the river. It is not unusual to see elephant swimming in front of camp and you can always see crocodiles and hippos from the deck.

3          Royal Zambezi Lodge, Lower Zambezi

Royal is based just outside the park but as such has a lot of freedom for it’s guests – the lodge is also very comfortable and has one of the only spas in the area. A highlight here is visiting the Goba people, a wonderfully friendly and fascinating tribe. The staff here are some of the friendliest in Zambia and often the game is so good around the camp that you don’t even have to enter the park itself.

4          Tena Tena Camp, South Luangwa

Tena Tena is Robin Pope’s most luxurious camp and is quirky and unique – the luxurious style of the bedrooms and bathrooms keep discerning clients happy but the real bonus here is the amazing game viewing around camp. Located in the private Nsefu sector which borders the unfenced South Luangwa this camp is in the middle of one of the best areas of Zambia for game viewing.

5          Sindabezi Island, Victoria Falls

Sindabezi is a remote island located in the middle of the Zambezi River – it is just six rooms and offers a truly Robinson Crusoe feel – it is luxurious yet rustic and you will often be joined by an elephant or two on the island – always a highlight. There is no where as unique as this in all of the Vic Falls area and we cannot recommend it highly enough.
