Experience the grandeur of Zimbabwe. This stunning country should be top of anyone’s list to travel to in Africa. If you are looking for places to stay, then look no further than Mpala Jena or Mpala Jena Suite and Sapi Explorers camp. With three stunning camps located within Zimbabwe’s private concessions, you will be hard pressed to return saying you didn’t enjoy your experience.

The benefits of staying within private concessions means you will rarely come across any other game viewing vehicle, unless it is from the same camp! Meaning your game viewing sightings are usually totally private. Which, in our opinion, is the only way to enjoy your safari.

Mpala Jena is located within a private concession in the Zambezi National Park (just down from Victoria Falls), and the camp is named after a ‘white impala’ that was spotted by rangers back in the 1970’s. Mpala Jena is a very small and intimate property, with only four tents and a maximum of 8 guests at any time throughout the camp during any season. Bliss.

Each of the luxury tents are raised on wooden decks with views overlooking the Zambezi river. Each of the luxury suites have their own private plunge pool so that you can enjoy a gin and tonic overlooking the goings on of wildlife within the river and on the banks. Mpala Jena is also consciously very environmentally friendly. You would be hard pushed to find any plastic throughout the camp for one, all the wooden decks have been constructed from recycled hardwoods and each of the rooms and the main camp’s electricity is all supplied by solar panels.

The activities you are likely to experience when staying at Mpala Jena will be early morning and late afternoon game drives within open 4×4 vehicles, boat cruises as well as one entrance ticket to see the Victoria Falls. If you would like to stretch your legs, then we would definitely recommend the guided walking safaris, here you can get a little closer than normal to the flora and fauna of Zimbabwe, it’s not always about the larger game, the smaller things are often much more fascinating – you should ask about how termites operate, we promise you, it is much more fascinating than it sounds!

If you are looking for something a bit more exclusive, then Mpala Jena Suite would be the perfect property. This is a very small and exclusively intimate two-bedroom tented villa which can sleep up to 5 people. Mpala Jena Suite comprises of two large and wonderfully spacious bedrooms lying either side of the dining area and central lounge. You will also have the use of your own plunge pool and fire pit with stunning views down to the Lower Zambezi. Not to mention the incredible staff who will be there to help your stay become one you will never forget – perhaps even persuading you to return!

Finally, the last property Great Plains has within Zimbabwe (at the moment!) is Sapi Explorers Camp. Located in the 120,000-hectare private Sapi Consession, this camp is one for the explorers amongst you… Adjoining the Mana Pools National Park, combined with Sapi they now form part of one the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This small and intimate ‘explorers’ camp lies on the banks of the Zambezi River and has 5 explorers style canvas tents. All tents are en-suite with flushing loos and fully working showers and running water. The focus of this wonderful tented camp is to explore Africa’s truly wild and remote areas. Venture through the bush on foot as well as embark on game drives witnessing some of the best wildlife viewing throughout Africa. This area is famous for its wonderful large packs of wild dog, one of the rarest animals throughout Africa. Explore the surrounding area either by foot, car or even boat with the serene canoe safari an experience you should definitely experience.
