Guiding in Africa is the most important part of any safari – probably the most famous guide of our generation is Ralph Bousfield, whose famous father was the first to integrate himself with the San people in the Makgadigadi Pans in Botswana – and who Ralph named the world renowned Jack’s Camp after in the same location. Ralph has guided all over Africa and his in depth knowledge of every cell of flora and fauna across the continent, as well as the fact he is an excellent raconteur means that guests clamour to go on the small number of privately guided safaris he now offers each year.

Well, we have an opportunity for you to join Ralph, and not Ralph alone, but the exceptional San bushmen guide Super Sande, and anthropologist Aleksandra Orbeck-Nilsen. These three big dogs of the Botswanan bush have designed a 7 day ‘Walk Of Wisdom’ tour starting and ending at San Camp in the Makgadigadi Pans in Botswana. It will offer a completely unique insight into the San bushmen community and offers a far deeper insight than any other safari possibly could into their ancient and fascinating culture.

Makgadikgadi Pans Walk Of Wisdom - Botswana

This is one of those trips that is truly once in a lifetime and not to be missed. The Walk of Wisdom will run over set dates in June-October 2025 and 2026 and costs from $23,855 USD per person sharing – 25% of which goes straight to the San Bushmen. The walks will run with a minimum of two people and maximum of eight ensuring that they remain incredibly personal and intimate.

The trip will include nights spent at either San Camp or Jack’s Camp, hosted by your private guides and then sleeping out under the milky way on the Pans themselves. A more remote location you cannot find in the whole of Africa – it must be the closest thing to being on the moon. You will find ancient early human artefacts as you walk, enjoy detailed explanations on the adapted flora and fauna and enjoy delicious food and nights around the campfire sharing stories.

Makgadikgadi Pans Walk Of Wisdom - Botswana

Botswana is so famous for the Okavango Delta and very few make it to the Salt Pans or Kalahari Desert when they visit this amazing country. This is such a shame as the stark contrast of lush bushland and waterways with desert is one of the most unique safaris you can possibly do. We also love the unique activities offered from Camp Kalahari, San Camp and Jack’s Camp – such as quad biking across the pans, visiting habituated meerkats, riding safaris across the Pans, sitting out with the milky way, visiting Chapman’s baobab. There is so much to do here which provides a welcome break from game drives. If you travel here in January-March you may be lucky enough to see a huge zebra and antelope migration which takes place during these months.
