Ker & Downey in Botswana have always had some amazing camps in remote locations throughout Botswana – their latest addition is extremely exciting as it awakens the explorer’s spirit within you by its location within vast and ancient landscapes and habitats.
Maxa Camp is a low impact camp positioned close to the source of the Selinda Spillway, and as such as an enviable location for anyone looking for a Delta camp which surpasses expectations in terms of wildlife viewing, scenery and birdlife. Maxa Camp truly encompasses that wild feel that we desire when we head out on safari and you really do feel you have come to the ends of the earth.

The dramatic landscape here makes for constantly shifting game movements as they move between grazing grounds and gather in huge quantities in these areas. Maxa’s guides share the old Ker & Downey ethos of there’s always something exciting to see and drives or walks with them are full of wonder and enchantment at the local flora and fauna.
The giant marula trees in the area offer the perfect place for picnics and cooling your feet in the shallow waters of the Delta – followed by explorations of ancient channels by mokoro. Maxa Camp is so remote that even your journey in will appeal to your adventurous spirit as you are flown in by a scenic helicopter flight from the local airstrip.

Maxa Camp is just 5 tented suites and is intimate, friendly, relaxed and most importantly has a very high sustainability ranking which we know makes us and you very happy. This is a Robinson Crusoe style safari and we absolutely love it.
We also must take this opportunity to highlight Ker & Downey’s new acquisition of King Lewanika Lodge in Liuwa Plains – Zambia. This area is breathtaking, with no one else to disturb your safari apart from local researchers and conservationists. Liuwa Plains as the name suggests has some of the most beautiful and widespread grass plains in Southern Africa. Although King Lewanika is extremely opulent it is also eco-concious and powered by solar. Another excellent camp with a very light footprint.

Liuwa Plains is extraordinary – boasting a thriving population of hyena, cheetah and lions – as well as their famous migration of wildebeest from October-May, which is a far better bet than the wildebeest migration in East Africa if you like to enjoy your wildlife viewing without unethical practises happening before your very eyes.

Like all of the best safari locations in Africa Liuwa takes time to reach, with a long light aircraft flight from Lusaka included in safaris we arrange here. Once there we recommend at least four nights, not least because King Lewanika Lodge is stunning and the areas so diverse that there is tonnes to do and see. The bird life here is prolific with over 334 species to be seen and admired.

You will never see a better sunset than those in Liuwa Plains, as the dusty plains are a perfect canvas for some of the best sunsets in Africa, not to mention the night sky – which is unpolluted and astounding.
