Many of our wonderful clients like to finish off their luxury safari with a fantastic luxury beach holiday – in East Africa this is very easy as both Zanzibar and the Kenya Coast is easily reachable from any of our luxury safari camps and lodges. Here we outline a few of our favourites. We tend to lean towards smaller boutique properties which are able to maintain the high level of personal and pampering service our clients receive when on safari at any of our amazing properties. Of course there are many more luxury East Africa beach lodges which are magical, but here are our favourites:
Water Lovers
Situated on the magnificent white sands of Diani Beach, on Kenya’s South Coast, Water Lovers comprises eight spacious cottages and a self contained villa with fully equipped kitchen, all with a private veranda offering stunning Indian ocean views. Arguably the centrepiece to Water Lovers Resort is the restaurant, Tides, offering Mediterranean cuisine using the freshest local ingredients, all set around a turtle shaped infinity pool. With only eight villas, Water Lovers is able to maintain an air of privacy whilst the friendly staff at the 24hour front desk are on hand to arrange any of the local activities including snorkelling, kayaking and diving. Water Lovers is very close to the best kite and windsurf school in Diani, the H2O Extreme Water Sport Centre. The boutique feel to this resort gives a feeling of exclusivity whilst maintaining the laid back charm of its surroundings.
A private, previously uninhabited island 5k from the east coast of Zanzibar, affords Mnemba Island its deserved title of one of the best, most exclusive beach lodges in Africa. The lodge itself is made up of ten bandas each beautifully but simply decorated to ensure nothing detracts from the beauty of its island location and the private view out to sea. Mnemba Island has successfully achieved the perfect balance, the opulence of an exclusive resort with ultimately the best in barefoot luxury. It’s what tropical dreams are made of!
Recipient of the Best Marine Safari Experience, the idyllic Fundu Lagoon is located on Pemba Island, part of the Zanzibar archipelago. Remote, and only accessible by boat, the resort affords guests the ability to completely unwind whilst their team of attentive staff are on hand to cater to guests every whim. Fundu Lagoon has been built sympathetically and in keeping with its natural surroundings, sandy paths lead you to the eighteen thatched tented rooms and suites, both of which have a private plunge pool and outdoor minibar. What sets this resort apart is the fully equipped PADI 5 star certified dive centre, offering trips to some of the worlds leading dive sites as well as an extensive list of watersport activities.
One architects vision for a sustainable, low impact yet unashamedly luxurious resort, White Sand excels on all fronts. The resort is powered by both solar and wind energy and has its own water source ensuring its environmental impact is kept to a minimum. All of the 11 villas are beautifully decorated and have a private pool and most of which sit directly on the sand. Of these villas 5 are one bedroom, 5 two bedroom and one palatial 5 bedroomed villa with just under 10 acres of tropical gardens and its own private stretch of white sandy beach. Should you wish to leave the beach the resort has a formidable array of facilities including a tropical spa complete with waterfall backdrop, fine dining restaurant and its own highly acclaimed water sports centre. Described by a recent guest as “total paradise, the closest you will ever come to being Robinson Crusoe” tucked away in an unspoilt island yet only 15 minutes flying time from Mombasa, the resort is surrounded by water adding to the feeling of total peaceful seclusion, your exclusive hideaway. The accommodation consists of nine beachfront cottages and eight sea view cottages, all of which are individually decorated and furnished with local artefacts and fabrics, a few of the beachfront cottages can accommodate families and all have a jacuzzi with spectacular sea views. Each cottage boasts a private sitting area where guests can sit drink in hand and watch the breathtaking African sunset, a truly magnificent sight due to the resort’s west facing position.
