Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya and is on an island next to the Indian Ocean, it has a major port and international airport. Mombasa is mainly muslim in culture, and is home to many different trades. An hour’s drive South of Mombasa lies Diani Beach, which has long been known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Kenya – miles and miles of white sand stretch before you, and the warm Indian Ocean is incredibly inviting. Diani is also easy to reach from all safari destinations, and has a number of great restaurants, as well as some fantastic hotels and boutique lodges.

Malindi (and Watamu, it’s smaller neighbour) is North of Mombasa, and sits at the mouth of the Galana River – Malindi is a beautiful little town with Arabic and swahili influences in the architecture. The Gedi Ruins in Malindi are a must, and there are also numerous conservation projects here, mainly working with turtles and sea birds.

The beaches on the South coast are magical, and it is hard to imagine anywhere more enjoyable to relax after a busy safari.
