The service here is impeccable and we have never felt so well rested after staying anywhere, although there is a lot on offer including romantic lunches and days spent on the remote Indian Ocean sandspit.
The Luxury Safari Company Award for: Most remote and relaxing beach lodge in East Africa.
The Funzi Keys nestles peacefully in the private white sands of its own peninsula and has been voted for the second time one of the top 101 hotels in the world by Conde Nast Publishers/Tatler. Also voted one of the top six private island resorts in the world by Conde Nast Traveller.
Funzi Keys is only 15 minutes flying or 2 hours drive time from Mombasa, The Funzi Keys´ unique appeal is its luxurious seclusion and beautiful natural scenery. Surrounded by water and superbly located on a west-facing beach with glorious views of the African sunset, this remote and exclusive hideaway is the perfect place to escape from the outside world in style. Designed to blend unobtrusively with its idyllic beachfront setting and to reflect the influence of the local culture and coastal architecture, the accommodation consists of nine spacious sea front cottages set along the high-water line and eight sea view cottages, all constructed of stone and thatch with large netted windows open to the balmy sea breezes.
Each of the individually designed rooms has a hand carved king-sized four-poster bed and is furnished with local wooden artefacts and colourful fabrics. Beachfront cottages additionally have a jacuzzi with spectacular sea view. All cottages are provided with fans, safes and beach accessories in the oversized bathroom. In front of each cottage is a private sitting area where guests can enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down in total privacy.
At the heart of The Funzi Keys is the informal yet stylish main building, where guests can relax and enjoy refreshing drinks served from the dhow-shaped bar or sample delicious island fare featuring freshly caught seafood and locally grown fruits and vegetables in the upper-level restaurant that overlooks the water.
Life at The Funzi Keys is relaxed and many guests do little more than unwind on the Mazeras stone deck of the 45m free-form pool with a drink while watching the local fishing dhows sail by.
For more energetic guests it is possible to enjoy sailing, creekfishing, windsurfing and canoeing or perhaps take a boat trip up the Ramisi River or Funzi Creek for an unforgettable glimpse of kingfishers, crocodiles and even dolphins. Funzi Keys is an excellent base for deep-sea fishing and scuba diving in the Pemba Channel, which can be arranged and paid for locally.Show Less
