Malawi – not to be overlooked, we talk about some great properties that need a visit.
Likoma Island is off the shore of Lake Malawi and it’s a place that is very special, the island is surrounded by clear water and has a very beachy feeling. The island has been voted as one of the most romantic places to visit in the world and was first opened in 2000. Each room is completely individual and chic, the local community have a huge part in the setup and running of the lodge.
Kaya Mawa is the exclusive main lodge on the island which is a gathering place for all sorts of not just winged creatures but also small reptiles and amphibians which are drawn to the island by the blooming tropical flowers. Bougainvillea, Frangipani and bird of paradise in full bloom bring glorious bursts of vibrant colour. The birdwatching on Likoma island is great and as spring approaches the island sees the return of some impressive birdlife like the yellow billed kite and its incredible wingspan of 180cm, the African fish eagle, paradise fly catchers, African hoopoe’s, sunbirds and kingfishers.
The lake itself offers a range of activities, a paradise of underwater life boasts over 1000 species of brightly coloured fish, snorkeling and diving prove to be pure bliss for all who visit. Sailing, kayaking and waterskiing if you would rather be above water. A romantic lake island paradise awaits you, try something new- your next escape should be to a tropical lake rather than beach.
