Located in the middle of the Timbavati, along the banks of the Nlharalumi river, Tanda Tula is perched with its tented Meru-style tented suites overlooking the African bush. We have news that the camp is now undergoing a huge overhaul with look and interior design and will be opening its doors in May 2023.

In place of Tanda Tula closing its doors for the time being, they have a new temporary replacement in Tanda Tula Plains Camp, located within the same area of the Timbavati, offering exactly the same feel as the original Tanda Tula, but with a different location and slightly different non-tented accommodation. We feel it is an exemplary, temporary replacement whilst the original Tanda Tula is under reconstruction and offers the same feel and has some of the same friendly faces to welcome you to stay.

Set in the same location, overlooking the Nlharalumi riverbed, Tanda Tula will welcome their guests to the new and more ecologically sensitive camp with a lighter footprint. Building is well under way and the new design embodies the essence of Tanda Tula Safari Camp and will continue to connect with their guests, to the African wilderness through canvas.

With renowned architect Nick Plewman, they have created a modern African design with a lighter footprint influenced by the surrounding culture and creativity. After 27 years their infrastructure requires modernisation to be true to their ethos of protecting the wilderness for generations to come. Tanda Tula’s purpose remains the same and is the chore of who they are, continuing to celebrate Africa, explore new and wild spaces, inspire change and to connect more to the people.

In embracing change, Tanda Tula is evolving from the traditional Meru-style tents to a light-filled and transparent design that merges seamlessly with the wilderness. Each suite is positioned so that all the interior and outdoor spaces have uninterrupted views across the riverbed. With a total of 7 safari suites and 2 family suites each comprising a spacious lounge, outdoor seating, new plunge pools, comfortable bed area, indoor bath and shower as well as an outdoor shower, totally energy efficient with solar panals, wifi and even a minibar! From May 1st to 30th June there will be a special re-opening offer to stay at the new Tanda Tula – so grab it quick! It will include all accommodation, all meals, laundry, drinks, tea and coffee, game drives and guided walks and transfers to and from the local Rockfig airstrip.

As the new Tanda Tula gets into shape, we will keep you posted with the progress of this re-vamp! We can’t wait to see the finished product and even be able to visit when it re-opens its doors. The whole feel and Tanda Tula’s original camp was so wonderful and relaxed, we can only expect bigger and better things to come out of this new re-design. If you would like to start planning your trip to the Timbavati, then please do not hesitate to get in contact so we can start planning your safari trip of a lifetime.
