Fly camping is overnight from your camp, under a mosquito net, with the stars sparkling down on you, and an armed ranger close by! It is a magical experience, and something which should not be missed.

Star beds are all the rage at the moment, with many camps offering luxury ‘star beds’ out in the bush – so you can sleep under the twinkling stars in some extraordinarily comfortable treehouses and star beds.

The best fly camping is in the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania, and also from Jack’s Camp in the Makgadikgadi or Kalahari (this is now available with riding safaris in between sleep outs) in Botswana – in these two areas you truly are out in the wilderness, with some of the most beautiful starlit skies in the world. This is an unmissable experience.

Fly camping in the Namib Desert in Namibia, is also an unbelievable experience. Fly camping in Kenya can be done at a supplement cost at Kicheche Bush Camp, Cottars 1920s Camp, and some lodges in Laikipia, Northern Kenya.

Tswalu Reserve in South Africa offer mind blowing sleep outs under the stars of the Kalahari desert.

Example Selous (this is often the format fly camping will take, or you will be driven to your fly camping destination before sundown) Walking & Fly Camping Itinerary

DAY 1: Early morning game drive or walk, followed by a delicious lunch in camp.

After tea you will set off with an armed ranger and guide, to walk 2-3 hours (this is completely negotiable, you might choose to do a longer or shorter walk) through some of the most unexplored regions of the Selous – areas which cannot be reached by car.

You will arrive in your fly camp before sundown, and will enjoy sundowners around the campfire, and a sumptuous dinner under the stars, before retiring to your comfortable bed.

DAY 2: Rise early and have breakfast as Tanzania wakes up. Walk back to camp, via a different route.
