Tanzania has become more and more popular in recent years and this is no surprise. This huge country still has so much space to be explored and many of the top camps and lodges are located in areas which are so wild and so remote that you really don’t see another soul. Luxury safaris here are some of the most rewarding in all of Africa and the game here can be sensational, not least due to the fact that the wildebeest migration spends all year moving it’s way around the Serengeti. Here are top ten luxury safari lodges and camps in Tanzania for 2016:

1          Greystoke Mahale, Western Tanzania

Greystoke is quite unlike any other property in all of Africa – it has everything from white sandy beaches and warm turquoise waters (Lake Tanganyika) to chimpanzees and amazing tropical forest walks. The lodge itself is small and intimate and any time spent here will touch your soul in the most healing way possible. Lazy days in between chimpanzee tracking are completely charmed in Mahale.

2          Mwiba Lodge, Southern Serengeti

Mwiba Lodge is one of the most exciting luxury lodges to start up in Africa, not least because of it’s exceptional location as the only lodge in the vast Maswa Game Reserve. The game here is great especially between December and March when the migration is nearby. The lodge suites are so luxurious you’ll want to live there and the landscape and vast range unlike any other.

3          Ngorongoro Highlands, Ngorongoro, Northern Tanzania

Set around 45 mins from the Ngorongoro Crater this luxury lodge is more of a Scottish highlands escape than an African camp but is exceptionally special. Set on the stunning Empakai Crater this warm and cosy lodge offers an insight into the local Masai way of life and is so remote you won’t see another soul. It is set at high altitude and the variety of ecosystems at work up here will blow your mind.

4          Manyara Ranch, Manyara, Northern Tanzania

This private concession allows people to really get into a safari without being stuck in a game drive vehicle all the time. Here you can do everything from riding safaris, walking safaris, game hide safaris and much more. The camp itself is luxurious and exclusive and has a wonderfully informal atmosphere.

5          Little Chem Chem, Tarangire, Northern Tanzania

Similar to Manyara Ranch this luxurious 5 tent camp is set in it’s own private concession with no other people and abundant game viewing. The camp is very luxurious and has style and flair, as well as offering a truly unique cultural experience and access to some of the most beautiful parts of this Northern Tanzania circuit.

6          Nduara Loliondo, Eastern Serengeti

Nduara is a quirky and unique luxury tented camp which focuses on the remote wilderness it is located in and the authentic and natural cultural experience one can have with the Masai here. It is very beautiful in this stunning area and you will feel as if you’re an intrepid explorer.

7          Namiri Plains, Eastern / Central Serengeti

This 6 tent luxury camp is located in an area known to be one of the best for big cat viewing in all of Africa. The area itself was closed to the public for many years as the Frankfurt Zoological Society used it for big cat research. Nothing can compare to the abundance of lion, leopard and cheetah in this area.

8          Serian Lamai, Northern Serengeti

Serian has a wildness about it’s safaris which cannot fail to capture your heart. Their mobile camp which follows the migration is also amazing but their camp in Lamai on the border with Kenya’s Masai Mara is our favourite. There is so much game up there and no people at all.

9          Sand Rivers Selous, Selous, Southern Tanzania

Sand Rivers is one of the most famous safari lodges in all of Africa and we’re not surprised. It’s location on the Rufiji River with views of purple mountains in the distance is absolutely amazing. The open front rooms are comfortable and relaxed and you feel immediately calmer as soon as you arrive. It’s hard to put into words how special this place is.

10       Kichaka Walking Safaris, Ruaha, Southern Tanzania

Kichaka Walking Safaris offer an amazing option for those that want to walk in a truly pristine environment far from the crowds and trappings of the busier parts of Africa. This is real life Africa with fantastic game, fascinating scenery and a homely feel in camp which is second to none.
