Londolozi is one of the original pioneering Private Game Reserves of the ecotourism industry in South Africa and is an unashamedly family run, stand alone operation. The root of the word Londolozi is the Zulu word for protect and means “protector of all living things” – an ambitious conservation ethic that Londolozi embraces in its sensitivity to the natural world. The reserve is internationally recognised for its far-sighted and progressive management of land and wildlife rehabilitation as well as productive community involvement. World renowned as one of Africa’s finest game lodges, Londolozi was the first game reserve in the world to be accorded Relais & Chateaux status, reinforcing its commitment to luxurious accommodation, fine cuisine and exceptional service.

At each of the five exquisite Londolozi Lodges, guests will experience exceptional cuisine and the very best game viewing with some of Africa’s finest rangers over. Wherever guests stay, they’ll enjoy over 14,000 ha of exceptional traversing in the Sabi Sand private game reserve – home of the Big Five.

The Private Granite Suites: These are the crème de la crème of the Londolozi portfolio. The Private Granite Suites offer an extraordinary experience for the exclusive use of up to six guests – the suites can be booked individually making it ideal for honeymooners or as a private camp for friends celebrating a special occasion. They do not accommodate children under the age of 16, unless guests book the camp exclusively.

The interior and look of the Private Granite Suites have an emphasis on space, light and privacy while blurring the barrier between inside and out. A seamless integration with nature is achieved with large doors and windows all opening directly onto the Sand River whilst a palette of silver, charcoal and elephant grey in a range of sumptuous materials creates an elegant and contemporary setting in each expansive suite. Each has it’s own private, heated swimming pool, perfect for relaxing after a long game drive.

This luxury safari lodge is for the discerning traveler who appreciates the finer details of an African safari.

Pioneer Camp: “The New Pioneer Camp 1926 is a symphony of style, bushveld architecture and nature.” – Dave Varty

Following the unqualified success of the Tree Camp and Granite Suites, Londolozi completed the newly renovated Pioneer Camp in 2010. Set amongst the dappled shade of 500-year-old ebony trees, the three luxury suites and generous bush home central area is the culmination of four decades of design experience in the safari industry. Pioneer Camp is the most secluded of Londolozi’s Luxury camps.  The three private suites have superb river views, perfect for honeymoons and private getaways or this adaptable camp can also be converted into a private bush home for family groups of 6 to14 people through linking glass sky walkways into interconnected family units.

The spacious entrance-halls leads into chic suites with clean, modern lines and floor to ceiling glass sliding panels which frame the wilderness views beyond. The bathrooms are classic Victorian with modern accents in the marble, chrome and mahogany finishes. Throughout the camp there is a pervading sense of history thanks to faithfully restored memorabilia of photographs, old suitcases, silver, crystal glass and gramophones. Everything about Pioneer Camp is deeply personal and provides a romantic backdrop to the adventures of a new generation of sophisticated travelers.

Tree Camp: Tree Camp embodies the very essence of Londolozi’s continuous mission to transcend and redefine the journey to the wilderness for the discerning visitor. This is a place of connoisseurship, leopards, orchids, lanterns and lead wood trees. Guests spend lazy afternoons on their decks, champagne in hand as they survey the ancient landscape, elephants feeding below in the river. Elegance and simplicity are the hallmarks of the Tree Camp sanctuaries. In every detail and feature, from the private swimming pools and salas to the Ralph Lauren wallpaper and chocolate plaited leather beds, this exclusive camp provides a matchless showcase of African excellence.

Tree Camp does not accommodate children under the age of 16, unless guests book the camp exclusively.

Varty Camp: All rooms are raised off the ground and shaded under a cathedral of trees and have private swimming pools framed by timber decks that overlook the riverine bush. The camp has a pleasingly down-to-earth quality and the emphasis on family heritage means that children of all ages always have a place at Varty Camp

Varty Camp is also home to the original Sparta Hunting Camp, the Londolozi boutique, the Cardio Vascular Room, Massage Treatment Room and the relaxing Library where guests can while away many an hour. Guests from all Camps are invited to make use of these facilities.

Founders Camp: This camp is slightly larger and perfect for families and small groups and accept children of four years and older. Founders Camp honours past guests and staff who have contributed to building Londolozi Game Reserve – it is their efforts, which have distilled the legacy of the past 30 years into a common mission. Enchanting, intimate and child friendly, Founders Camp is ideally situated to provide an insider’s view of the secrets of river life. Seven idyllic chalets repose in the shade of ancient ebony and matumi trees along the banks of the Sand River. This is an African safari in the classic bush bohemian style, replete with black and cream ticking fabric and original mahogany beds. Deep cream couches, military chests, compass safari lamps and a riverside lounge sala, create a mood of easy luxury and laid back welcome for discerning families and travelers.

As the original South African Safari destination, Londolozi, over its 82-year history, has built up a formidable team of experienced rangers, trackers and naturalists. Many of them grew up living off the land and therefore have an incredible knowledge of the area and deep cultural connections to the fauna and flora.

Londolozi has drawn on the considerable wisdom, talent and experience of their guiding teams, and returned to the original spirit of fun and wild adventure of a Safari to Africa. Their emphasis in 2011 and beyond is to redefine the essence of the ‘Photographic Safari Experience’ by creating still greater opportunities for engagement and experience. With over 16 000 hectares of traversing wilderness, no two game drives are ever the same. Trackers sit up at the front of the Land Rover looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers drive with astonishing skill through ravines and thickets in pursuit of elusive animals.

And all the while wowing guests with their outstanding knowledge and unforgettable stories.
