The Mahale Mountains are famous for their habituated chimpanzees and stunning vistas over the nearby Lake Tanganyika. Lake Tanganyika is the second largest fresh water lake in the world by volume and depth, and is the world’s longest lake. It is divided into four countries, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. Lake Tanganyika also supports almost 100 kinds of colourful cichlid fish.
Gombe Stream National Park is only 20 sq km of forest running along the Northern Shore of Lake Tanganyika. The terrain is steep valleys, and tropical forest vegetation – it is only accessible by boat and is famously where Jane Goodall conducted some of her behavioral research on chimpanzees.
